The Polar Bear population is difficult to survey. Their constant movements over ice floes, without territory boundaries and the harsh living conditions makes birth, and death record maintenance an extremely harsh task. The working estimate being used by biologists now is between 20,000 and 25,000 total Polar Bears. They range across the borders of Alaska to Russia, from Canada to Greenland, and into Norway's Svalbard archipelago. It's believed by most that 60 percent of these Polar Bears live in Canada. They are listed as "Vulnerable" according to the IUCN Red List. While the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services Endangered Species List has them listed as "Threatened". Russia and Canada have also listed the Polar Bear as a "Species of Concern". Recent studies show a 22% decline in populations in the Canada's Western Hudson Bay populations, since the early 1980s.
